As the days grow shorter and the nights longer, the annual ritual of turning back the clocks can be a stark reminder of the approaching winter. While many of us cherish the extra hour of sleep, the dwindling daylight can leave us feeling a bit down. This is especially true if we are in the process of healing from divorce and in the process of trying to thrive. Talk about a damper!!!

But good thing you’re here my friend. This Daylight Savings time – I got you! In this darkness, there’s an opportunity for growth, self-discovery, and personal development.

Here are 8 ways to embrace Daylight Savings and make this time actually work FOR YOU.

1. Creating Awareness:

Before we dive into the ways to thrive during this transition, it’s essential to acknowledge the change. It’s coming, but we GOT THIS! It’s totally normal to feel a little melancholy as the sun sets earlier. If there’s anything we do at Her heart Heals, it’s that recognizing your emotions is the first step in dealing with them. Being aware of changes in our environment makes us masters at getting to know ourselves. Stay curious and LEAN IN. This is quite exciting if you really think about it!

2. Create a Cozy Haven:

One of the joys of the dark season is the opportunity to create a warm and inviting space. Light some candles, add soft blankets, and fill your home with items that bring you comfort. This not only makes your surroundings more pleasant but also promotes a sense of well-being. When we have things we can easily go-to, we can thank ourselves for having our own back.

3. Plan New Activities To Navigate The Change:

Rather than lamenting the loss of daylight and getting stuck in a spiral, plan meaningful activities for the darker evenings. Host a movie night, start a book club, or explore new hobbies. Filling your time with engaging pursuits can keep your mind and heart light.

4. Self-Care Helps Us Embrace Stillness:

Dark evenings are THE perfect time to indulge in self-care rituals. I’ve been making it a point to start getting into the habit of finding new ways to bring in self-care to my daily routine as part of my efforts to go at a slower pace and it’s been so rewarding. Draw a warm bath, practice deep breathing or meditation, and pamper yourself with skincare routines. Embrace these moments of solitude to rejuvenate your body and spirit.

5. Embrace Silence & Moments Of Stillness:

In the quieter evenings, take the opportunity to embrace the silence. Find solace in the peaceful moments when the world slows down. Allow your mind to wander and reflect on your journey of healing and self-discovery. Practicing being still is a form of meditation. It helps to regulate our nervous system and allows our bodies and mind to restore. This allows us to think clearly and make big decisions from a better perspective!!! Don’t sleep on the stillness!!!

6. Engage in Reflection:

Use this time to reflect on your personal growth journey. Consider how far you’ve come since your divorce and what goals you have for the future. Write in a journal or create a vision board to keep your aspirations in focus.

7. Circadian Rhythm:

If you find yourself struggling with mood changes during the darker months, consider light therapy to help get your circadian rhythm on track. The quicker our bodies regulate to the rhythm of the daylight, the quicker we can feel back on track.

When you wake up, I highly recommend getting outside as quickly as possible and getting at least 5 minutes of natural sunlight on your face. As the sun sets, do the same thing and head outside. This signals to your body it’s time to wake up and start to turn down for the day. This technique can help alleviate symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and improve your overall well-being. It’s been a game changer for me, and not just during this time.

8. Connect with Nature:

Despite the shorter days, make an effort to connect with nature. Spend time outdoors, even if it’s just for a brisk walk in the crisp air. Nature can provide a sense of healing and renewal. Bonus points if you pair this with your circadian rhythm work from #7!

As the clocks roll back and the nights grow longer, don’t view it as a time of darkness but as an opportunity for personal growth and self-care. Embrace the changes, create a cozy haven, and engage in meaningful activities. Reflect on your journey and connect with the light within you. With these practices, you can thrive during the transition to shorter days. Embrace the darkness, for it is in the shadows that we often find our brightest light.

Remember boo, you have the strength and resilience to make every season a season of growth and transformation.
